William E. “Bill” Mahan, 97, of Urbana, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2016 in Vancrest of Urbana.
He was born on September 24, 1919 in Urbana, OH, the son of Miles Ernest and Lora Belle (Gentry) Mahan. He was a 1938 graduate of Urbana High School, was an UHS historian for 50 years and was the first editor of the Hillclimber newspaper. Bill was a tool and die engineer and worked for Urbana Tool & Die, Bulldog Electric and William Bailey. He was a past master and past high priest with Harmony Lodge No. 8 Masons in Urbana and was a member of the Champaign County Antioch Shrine Club. Bill was interested in genealogy and was proud of the Letters to the Editor he often wrote. He also attended various churches in the area and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Sharan (Frank) Isabelle, Bonita “Bonnie” (Jim) Dellinger and Billie (Tim) Biddle; grandchildren, Frank (Carrie) Isabelle II, Kristina (Geoffrey) Frankel, Tony (Andrea) Watson and Josh Dellinger; great-grandchildren, Frank III, Vincent and Nicholas Isabelle and Madyson, Pryce and Rayce Watson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Mary Louise (Zeigler) Mahan; sisters, Anna Mae Mahan and Louise Starr; grandson, Andy Dellinger; special cousin, Maxine Nova; and special friend, Betty Hartzler.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Vancrest for the love and care they showed their father, as well as the staff of Community Mercy Hospice for their tender care of Bill in his final days.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016 in the WALTER & STOWE FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. A graveside service will follow visitation in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Tremont City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Andy Dellinger Memorial Scholarship Fund entrusted to Peoples Savings Bank, 10 Monument Square, Urbana, OH 43078.
