William "Bill" A. Pauly

William A. Bill Pauly, 77, of Urbana, died at 1:43 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2014 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center, Springfield. Bill was born in Springfield, OH on September 29, 1936 to the late Raymond and Norma (McBeth) Pauly. He grew up in St. Paris, OH and graduated from St. Paris High School in 1954. He joined the Navy and was assigned to a P2V-7 patrol bomber from 1955-58. It patrolled the Arctic, Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean oceans for submarine ships in trouble and plane wrecks. Bill was an electronic counter magnetic anomaly detector (ECM) operator (bombardier). On his return to the states, he attended Urbana Junior College and graduated from The Ohio State University as a teacher. He taught at Miami East Junior High for 26 years. He then drove test cars at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty for several years. Bill was very active as a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary Catholic Church in Urbana for many years and was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 1727, Urbana, OH. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Sheila (Ryan) Pauly of Urbana; 2 sons, Kevin M. Pauly of Springfield and Eric C. Pauly (Stephanie Shaw) of Dayton; 2 sisters-in-law, Elizabeth A. (Roy) Manning and Adele R. (Pat) Borns and nephew, Alex Borns, all of Dayton; and also many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and several cousins. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Urbana with Father Larry Gearhart celebrant. Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana, where military honors will be provided the U.S. Navy and American Legion Pearce-Kerns Post 120. Memorial contributions may be made in Bills memory to St. Mary Catholic Church, 231 Washington Avenue, Urbana, OH 43078 or Community Mercy Hospice, 444 W. Harding Road, Springfield, OH 45504.
