Thomas E. “Tom” Smith, 77, was carried away by angel wings from his residence in Urbana on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. He was born on September 22, 1935 in South Charleston, OH, the son of Jacob and Carrie (Williams) Smith. He retired from International Harvester after 39 years of service and was named the International Harvester Volunteer of the Year. Tom was also a member of the Dove Pentecostal Assembly in Springfield. He, along with two other gentlemen, designed the Little League Diamonds at the city park. Tom coached Little League teams for over 30 years and was elected into the Urbana Baseball Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Wilma (Sloan Salyer) Smith, daughter Vonnie (Ed) Engle of Urbana, sons, Tom Smith Jr. of Urbana, Steve (Valerie) Smith of Mechanicsburg, Chuck (Angie) Salyer of St. Paris, Todd (Linda) Salyer of Urbana, Greg Salyer of Urbana and Tyler Salyer of Urbana, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, sisters Ella Smith of South Charleston and Carrie (Gilbert) Cave of Springfield, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Estella “Teddy” Smith, sisters Galen Bethel, Clara Hayes, Annabelle Randall and Lulabelle Mae Smith, and brothers, John Smith and Roy Smith. Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012 in the Walter & Smith Funeral Home, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2012 with Pastor Larry Willoughby officiating.
