Ruth E. (Hurd) Ervin Zerkle

Ruth Ellen (Hurd) Ervin Zerkle, 84, of Urbana, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on November 12, 2014 at 3:02 a.m. She was born in Champaign County on February 21, 1930 to parents Joseph Franklin and Bessie Rose (Linaweaver) Hurd, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by husband Homer Zerkle, two brothers and one sister. Ruth attended Urbana High School. She was formerly married to Francis Albert Frank Ervin and they had five children. She was a homemaker and enjoyed being involved in school activities and scouting with her children, and encouraged them to appreciate the arts, including dance and music. Ruth was a member of the Sweet Adelines, a womens barbershop musical group. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana and was active in her church and her community throughout her life. She was also a former member of the Eastern Star. Ruth made friends easily and maintained them for a lifetime. She is survived by her children, Linda Ervin of Massachusetts, Peggy (Tom) Davis of Florida, Carol (Mark) Hunt of Cable, Jeff (Nancy) Ervin of Urbana and Nancy (Jerry) Hensley of Kentucky; James (Kathy) Zerkle of St. Paris and Charles (Nancy) Zerkle of Urbana; her sister, Jennie Shirk of Urbana; 11 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2014 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 in the First Presbyterian Church, 116 W. Court St., Urbana, with Rev. Kevin Horrigan officiating.
