Russell Eugene Hull, affectionately known as Gene, loving husband and father, passed away on April 26, 2025, at the age of 85 in Springfield, Ohio. Born on April 8, 1940, in Weston, West Virginia, Gene's journey through life was marked by unwavering kindness, generosity, and a longing to uplift those around him.
Gene had a distinguished career for 33 years with the State of Ohio Department of Taxation, where he served as a supervisor. The many lives he touched during his tenure will carry forward his legacy of hard work and respect. He was not just a supervisor; he was a mentor and a friend, beloved by those who had the privilege to work alongside him.
A proud veteran, Gene served in the United States Air Force. His commitment to service extended beyond his military duties, as he continued to dedicate himself to his community. Gene was a volunteer who was always ready to lend a hand; if he heard of anyone in need, he was the first to step up without hesitation. His nature was that of giving—a wonderful man who personified patience and kindness, regarded as the salt of the earth. His love for his family and friends was unparalleled, and he would give anyone anything if it meant bringing them joy.
Gene had several beloved hobbies, including woodworking, where he honed his skills in wood turning and carving. Many pieces he created can still be seen across the town, such as those displayed at the Scioto Inn, a testament to his craftsmanship and artistic spirit.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Sondra (Doughty) Hull; loving daughter, Jennifer (Shane) Abney; loving son, David Hull; and cherished granddaughter, Breana (Taron) Taylor. Gene also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Naomi and Nalin Taylor, along with several nieces and nephews who held him dear in their hearts.
Gene has been reunited with his parents, Manley and Leola (McClain) Hull, alongside his brother, Richard A. Hull, both of whom have left an indelible mark on his life.
