SHAFFNER, Rita Kay, age 74 of Urbana, Ohio passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family on April 27, 2024. She was born on March 31, 1950 to the late Robert and Wanda (Andrews) Dillman in Springfield, Ohio. In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her daughters: Melissa Rump and Melissa Summers; granddaughter, Brandi Summers; brother, Mark Dillman; as well as her dear friend, Alice Henry. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 47 years, Dennis Shaffner; children: Shawn (Melissa) Shaffner, Christian (Michelle) Adams, Malorie (Bill) Roberds, Dustin Shaffner, Misty (Jason) Hilkerbaumer, Joshua (Jessie) Shaffner, Landon Shaffner, Tela Shaffner, Mark (Emily) Shaffner, and Scioto Shaffner; 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Rita is also survived by her siblings: Jerry Hayden, Steve Hayden, Sherry (Larry) Hobson, Sheila (John) Gibeck and Renee (Gary) Brookins; numerous nieces and nephews and a son-in-law, Tony Rump. She attended Freedom Road Ministries where she was proud to be a Sunday School teacher. Rita enjoyed doing word searches and was an animal lover. Rita's true passion was helping children; she and Dennis fostered for 32 years and because of that, Rita was known as "Mom" and "Grandma" to many. She felt very blessed for those titles. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with her funeral beginning at 10:00 a.m. officiated by her son-in-law, Pastor Jason Hilkerbaumer.
