Richard Lewis Saunders, age 83, of Urbana, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2024 at the Dayton VA Hospital. He was born on November 21, 1940, in Huntington, West Virginia, the son of William and Idella (McClasky) Saunders. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deborah Saunders on August 29, 2020 and his brother, Larry Saunders. He is survived by 4 children, Mary Parris, Lori (Jamie) Ferryman, Karen Garrison and Richard Saunders, Jr.; brother, William Edward (Audrey) Saunders; 15 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Richard proudly served in the United States Navy as a Navy SEAL. His time in the military shaped him into the courageous and disciplined man he was known to be. Following his military service, Richard embarked on a fulfilling career at Grimes Aerospace in Urbana, Ohio where he continued to work for most of his life.
Richard had an array of passions that brought joy to his life. A dedicated NASCAR fanatic, he loved the thrill of the race and cherished following every turn on his television screen. Above all else, Richard valued his family the most in life. Spending time with them brought him immeasurable happiness.
Graveside service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024 at 10a.m. at Union Cemetery with Pastor Ray Branstiter officiating. His family would like to thank the staff at the Dayton VA Hospital for their comfort and care during Richard’s stay over the last months. Arrangements in care of Walter & Lewis Funeral Home.
