John R. Jack Leffel, 87, formerly of New Carlisle, died on Sunday, June 1, 2014 in Dayspring of Miami Valley, Fairborn, OH. He was born on March 8, 1927 in Springfield, OH, the son of Russell and Esther (Zopf) Leffel. Jack served in the Army, Marine Reserves and the Coast Guard. He previously worked as a police officer prior to becoming a firefighter with the Pike Township Fire Department in Clark County, OH. After retiring from the department, he then served as a volunteer. Jack loved helping others, including the Animal Welfare League and veterans, and enjoyed playing cards. Survivors include sons, David Leffel and wife Cheri and John Leffel and wife Trena, all of Springfield, OH; 6 grandchildren, including Brandi (Joe) Rychnovsky, who was his caregiver; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte (Skidmore) and son, Robert Bobby Leffel. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2014 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana, where a service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014. Entombment will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery Mausoleum, Urbana. Memorial contributions in Jacks memory may be made to the Pike Township Fire Association, 8440 Troy Road, New Carlisle, OH 45344.
