John Lee Dewitt

John Lee DeWitt, 69, of Urbana, died Friday, May 17, 2013 in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana. He was born in Norwalk, OH on May 15, 1944, the son of Hubert and Edith (Dove) DeWitt. John was a member of the Greenwich UMC. He was a 1962 graduate of South Central High School in Greenwich, received his bachelor’s degree in 1966 from Ohio Northern University where he played baseball and holds the record for the most strike outs during a single game, and received his master’s degree from Xavier University. John retired from Urbana High School in 1996 after 30 years, where he was a business teacher, guidance counselor, coached baseball and for 22 years coached the freshman basketball team. He also coached Pony League and Little League. John enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds, country music and vacationing in Myrtle Beach. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Frieda (Adams) DeWitt, who he married on Dec. 19, 1964, sons, Timothy DeWitt of Apex, N.C., and Shawn (Zibby) DeWitt of Urbana, grandchildren, Brennan and Broghan DeWitt and Jackson and Jenna DeWitt, and sister, Nancy Kelley of Elyria. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 with Pastor Jim Lillibridge officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery. Honorary pallbearer will be Jim Kelley and active pallbearers will be Michael Kelley, Michael Adams, Bill Borland, Jeff Rogan, Brad DeWitt and Jerry Kirk.
