Joan E. Shroyer

It is with deep sadness that the family of Joan E. (Gnau) Shroyer announces her passing on Monday, September 17, 2018 after a long illness at the age of 82 years.
Joan was born August 11, 1936 in Springfield, OH to John J. and Martha (Fahey) Gnau. She graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954. On July 16, 1955 she married Phillip Shroyer Sr. at First Baptist Church in Hamburg, NY with Phil’s uncle, Rev. William Shroyer, officiating. The couple moved to Urbana in 1964 with their young family.
During her early years, Joan served as executive secretary for several businesses including The Kissell Company, Urbana University and RCA Corp. She and Phil later purchased and co-operated Miller Office Supply with stores in Springfield and Urbana until 2009.
Joan was a long-time member of the Grace Baptist Church where she enjoyed volunteering in the church nursery. Those close to her knew she loved bowling with her sisters (earning several trophies) and had a passion for cheering on the Cincinnati Reds.
Joan will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 63 years, Phil, and her children, Pam (Michael) Harrington, Allen (Sandy) Shroyer and Tonya (Robert) Hall. Joan will also be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, David, Evan, Phillip III, Paige, Austin and Katie; great-grandchildren, Alex, Jonah and Evelyn; sisters, Rita Robinson, Barbara Wall, Marilyn Aldridge, Monica Porter and Angela (Phil) Thomerson; brothers-in-law, Stan (Chris) Shroyer and Ron (Carol) Shroyer; and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, John and Martha Gnau; brothers, Terry, Jimmy and Bobby; sister-in-law, Lois (Jimmy) Gnau; and brothers-in-law, Gene Porter, Frank Wall and Tom Aldridge.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. in the WALTER & LEWIS FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main St., Urbana. A celebration service will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11 a.m. in Grace Baptist Church, 960 Children’s Home Road, Urbana with Pastor Aaron Samples officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery.
