Cpl. Charles Eugene Hiltibran was born on July 5, 1931 in Cable, Ohio. He was missing for almost 70 years, but was never forgotten by his family members. Charles is preceded in death by his mother, Anna Gammell (Hiltibran) McBride, father, Elmer Fredrick Hiltibran, step-father, Daniel Edward McBride, and sisters, Esther (Hiltibran) Stewart of Urbana, Ohio, Betty (Hiltibran) Achatz of Buffalo, New York, and Bertha (Hiltibran) Geis of London, Ohio. Charles is survived by his step-brother, Daniel McBride of Springfield, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles enlisted in the United States Army on July 6, 1948, just one day after he turned 17. He was later assigned to the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division in the United States Army. Charles was reported missing in action on December 2, 1950. His remains were not able to be recovered following the conclusion of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. His unidentified remains were part of the 55 boxes recovered by the United States after an agreement with North Korea on July 27, 2018. They were placed at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. Scientists at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency were able to identify his remains on April 20, 2020 and notify his surviving family members.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 27, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Walter and Lewis Funeral Home, 642 S. Main Street, Urbana, Ohio. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Urbana VFW Post 5451 Brownridge Hall, 220 E. Court St, Urbana, Ohio. Charles will be laid to rest at Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio, where full military honors will be rendered. Arrangements entrusted to the Walter and Lewis Funeral Home, Urbana, Ohio.
